SELMER/UMI ANNOUNCE FLUTE PLANT CONSOLIDATION
ELKHART, IN - October 3, 2000 - The Selmer Company, Inc. and United Musical Instruments U.S.A., Inc. (“UMI”) today announced plans to move production of Emerson brand flutes and piccolos into UMI’s present Armstrong flute production facility in Elkhart, Indiana. Currently, Selmer produces its Emerson brand instruments in a leased facility also in Elkhart. The consolidation, which will take place over the next two months, will enable the companies to better utilize existing production facilities to achieve more efficient cost control and improve the overall quality of their instruments. The companies will retain the best practices of each operation to achieve the highest quality standards that their customers have come to expect.
Many of Emerson’s skilled employees will be transferred to the Armstrong plant to continue manufacturing and assembling existing Emerson flute and piccolo models. The consolidation is not expected to have any adverse effect upon future deliveries of either Emerson or Armstrong brand instruments. Emerson’s sales, customer service and product development operations will remain an integral part of The Selmer Company.
